Conquering kotor fortress
Listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Kotor's San Giovanni Fortress offers breathtaking views across the stunning Kotor Bay. The medieval fortification was built in phases between 9th and 19th centuries and represent a complete belt around the Old Town. City walls protect the city on its northern and south-western side, towards the waters. On top of the mountain is the San Giovanni castel at a 280 meter height dominating the eastern bay, the fortification system and the city. The 1979 earthquake damaged much of the buildings in Kotor including the fortifications.
The city walls of Kotor are around 4.5km in total length. The best time to climb the 1350 steps is during the morning or late afternoon and the round trip will take around 2 hours.
You will need good solid shoes (no flip-flops) as the stairs are uneven in places. The entrance fee is 3 €.
